History of the Chamber

With a membership of more than 1,200 businesses and organizations, the Fresno Chamber of Commerce is one of the largest Chambers in the state of California in addition to being the largest business organization in the region.  While our membership’s diverse body includes businesses of all sizes, corporations, associations and professionals, small businesses represent roughly 80 percent of our membership – leading our team to establish advocacy on their behalf as a central goal.

Since 1885, the Fresno Chamber of Commerce has been working hard to strengthen our regional economy, encourage growth and identify needs and opportunities of the business community. While helping over 1,200 member businesses guard their futures, we’ve helped turn the Fresno area into a great place to work, live and raise a family.

Fresno County is known as the breadbasket of the world. From oranges to grapes, kiwi fruit to persimmons, our County’s soil, without a doubt, has something to do with your next meal. And while our residents and business community celebrate this agricultural bounty and unique heritage with each bite of fresh produce they take pleasure in, they also enjoy the urban offering of Fresno, the county seat and California’s fifth largest city. From its dusty origins as a railroad town, Fresno has evolved into a thriving city whose cultural development matches its abundant commercial and residential growth.

However, it is imperative to know that although agriculture is the economic base of the Central Valley, the landscape is evolving to include thriving businesses and professions in manufacturing, food processing, health care and technology.

Our city proudly boasts more than 300 days of sunshine each year, making our area a prime destination for outdoor recreation of all kinds. We also offer an outstanding mix of shopping, dining, and entertainment choices. Whether you’re looking for wide open spaces, small town charm, a trendy urban vibe or something in between, you’ll find it here in the City and County of Fresno.

Here at the Fresno Chamber of Commerce, our mission is simple, To promote and support the success of the regional business community through effective advocacy, education and relationship building. We proudly serve as the voice for our business community and work continuously to advocate the increasingly important message to our residents and elected officials, which is that we are vital to our community and are willing to fight to preserve, further enhance and economically develop the place that we call home and the place where we raise our families.

Ultimately, our objectives as your Chamber are to:

  • Promote a Strong Local Economy
  • Provide Opportunities to Network and Build Relationships
  • Deliver Programs to Help Businesses Grow
  • Represent and Advocate on Behalf of Business
  • Enhance Commerce Through Community Stewardship

These goals are accomplished through our Chamber committees. Our committees provide members with the opportunity to participate and provide input on key issues. Chamber leadership is intensely involved throughout the wider community, encouraging vision, cooperation and consistency in long-range regional planning and decision-making. Events, projects and programs are designed and implemented to enhance the economic development of the greater Fresno area. The Chamber develops information resources that are vital to regional, state and national business development.
