Former Fresno County Supervisor Phil Larson has passed away at the age of 92. 

Larson was a major figure in Central Valley agriculture, having also served as the President of the Fresno County Farm Bureau. 

Larson’s life: Larson was born in 1933 and served in the Marine Corps during the Korean War. 

  • Following his military service, Larson worked for Wilbur-Ellis Co. from 1962 to 2000. 
  • He was first elected to the Fresno County Board of Supervisors in 2002, going on to serve three terms before retiring. 
  • Along with his work with the Fresno County Farm Bureau, Larson was the state director for California Farm Bureau District 7. 

What they’re saying: “Phil dedicated his life to serving California agriculture and our region. His impact will be felt for generations through the farmers, families, and communities he championed,” the Fresno County Farm Bureau said in a statement. “We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him. He will be greatly missed.” 

  • Supervisor Brian Pacheco, who succeeded Larson in District 1, remembered him as a friend. 
  • “I was honored to know John “Phil” Larson. He was both a mentor and a friend,” Pacheco said. “For the people who didn’t know Phil, he was a kind and gentle family man and a man of faith. I want to express my sympathies to Joyce, his wife of 68 years, their children, and extended family.” 
  • Supervisor Buddy Mendes added, “Phil Larson was a long-time personal friend, dedicated public servant, and proud advocate for Fresno County’s agricultural and westside communities. His leadership and commitment left a lasting impact. My thoughts are with his family and all who knew him.”
