Firefighters from the Fresno Fire Department responded just before 3 p.m. Tuesday to the 4300 block of N. Emerson Ave. after reports of a kitchen fire.
Crews arrived to find smoke coming from a duplex and discovered a fire that started in the kitchen had extended into the attic space. The occupant was able to safely exit before firefighters arrived and was evaluated and treated at the scene for smoke inhalation.
Firefighters quickly worked to contain the blaze while also conducting salvage operations to protect personal belongings in both units. Three residents were temporarily displaced as a result of the incident.
One firefighter was also evaluated and treated at the scene for heat exhaustion.
Fire officials determined the blaze was accidental and caused by cooking.
Authorities reminded residents to use caution while cooking, never leave food unattended on the stove, and ensure smoke alarms are working, noting that early notification and quick action can make a difference during a fire.
