Firefighters with the Fresno City Firefighters Association Local 202 will participate in the Muscular Dystrophy Association’s annual “Fill the Boot” campaign on Monday, continuing a decades-long fundraising partnership between firefighters and the nonprofit organization.

Firefighters will collect donations from 6 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the intersection of Blackstone and Nees avenues in Fresno to support children and adults living with muscular dystrophy, ALS, and related neuromuscular diseases.

The Fill the Boot campaign began in 1954 through a partnership between the International Association of Fire Fighters and the Muscular Dystrophy Association. Since then, firefighters have raised more than $750 million for MDA programs, research and care efforts.

According to MDA, the fundraising has helped support medical advancements, including the development of 30 FDA-approved treatments for neuromuscular diseases since 2015.

“Firefighters have proudly supported the Muscular Dystrophy Association’s mission to help families live longer, stronger lives, and we are honored to continue this partnership,” said George Arthur, MDA Coordinator of Fresno City Firefighters Association Local 202 “Every dollar raised in our community helps fund life-changing research and care that makes a difference for families nationwide.”

In addition to fundraising efforts, firefighters volunteer at MDA Summer Camp, which provides children with neuromuscular diseases a week of recreational activities and independence. MDA and IAFF also work together to provide awareness and resources for firefighters affected by ALS.

Community members can donate in person during the event or online through Fresno Fill the Boot.
