Fresno Unified Trustee Elizabeth Jonasson Rosas abstained Wednesday on a resolution tied to the Southeast Development Area, saying the school board should remain focused on student achievement rather than land-use policy.
Jonasson Rosas said she supports smart growth and sustainable development but argued “separation of powers and jurisdictions exist for a reason,” adding that Fresno Unified was elected to govern schools, not development projects. She said the district’s priority should remain improving academics and making Fresno Unified a destination for families through stronger schools.
The resolution passed 4-0 with three abstentions. Joining Jonasson Rosas in abstaining were trustees Susan Wittrup and Claudia Cazares.
