Hanford native Lori Chavez-DeRemer resigned from her position as Labor Secretary on Monday.

The White House announced that Chavez-DeRemer is leaving President Donald Trump’s administration for a position in the private sector.

What they’re saying: “Labor Secretary Lori Chavez-DeRemer will be leaving the Administration to take a position in the private sector,” White House Communications Director Steven Cheung wrote on X. “She has done a phenomenal job in her role by protecting American workers, enacting fair labor practices, and helping Americans gain additional skills to improve their lives.”

  • Cheung said Deputy Secretary Keith Sonderling will take over as Acting Secretary.
  • Chavez-DeRemer wrote on X that it has been an honor to serve in the Trump administration, calling Trump the greatest president of her lifetime.
  • “At the Department of Labor, I am proud that we made significant progress in advancing President Trump’s mission to bridge the gap between business and labor and always put the American worker first,” Chavez-DeRemer said. “We created new pathways to mortgage-paying jobs, prepared workers to excel in the age of AI, took steps to lower prescription drug costs, promoted retirement security, and so much more.”
  • She added, “We live in the best country in the world, and I am incredibly grateful that I had this opportunity to meet workers across the nation, listen to their stories, and deliver wins for them and their families. Thank you, President Trump. While my time serving in the Administration comes to a conclusion, it doesn’t mean I will stop fighting for American workers. I am looking forward to what the future has in store as I depart for the private sector.”

Flashback: Chavez-DeRemer was sworn in as Labor Secretary last March.

  • She previously served one term in the House of Representatives for Oregon’s 5th district from January 2023 to January 2025.

Driving the news: Her resignation comes after internal investigations regarding her conduct.

  • One such allegation of her conduct centered on a complaint that Chavez-DeRemer was having a sexual relationship with a member of her security team. She was also accused of using business trips as excuses for personal travel and sending staff to pick up liquor, according to a report from CNN. Some of the trips allegedly included a UFC fight in Chicago and a Morgan Wallen concert.
  • The New York Times also previously reported that Chavez-DeRemer’s husband, Shawn DeRember, was banned from the Labor Department’s headquarters after two women accused him of sexually assaulting them. The Washington Post later reported that police closed the investigation after not finding evidence of a crime.
