Former Madera Mayor Santos Garcia suddenly passed on Saturday at the age of 69, his family announced.
Garcia, a retired United States Postal Service mail carrier and proud member of the National Association of Letter Carriers union, championed
A life of service: As described in a 2015 Op-Ed, Garcia’s career with the USPS began in Berkeley, where he at one point acquired the route servicing the University of California, delivering mail and parcels to various departments and graduate programs.
- He would return to the San Joaquin Valley, working out of various Fresno-based USPS stations and servicing the greater Fresno metropolitan area.
- In 2018, Garcia was elected to the Madera City Council, representing District 5 which stretches from downtown to the eastern edge of the city limits.
- Two years later, Garcia would capture the City’s Mayoralty with 43.18% of the vote. In 2024, he was defeated in a three-way battle for the seat by incumbent Mayor CeCe Gallegos.
What they’re saying: “I was deeply saddened to learn of the sudden loss of former mayor Santos Garcia. Not only was Santos a dedicated leader and advocate, but he was also a friend and ally,” Madera County Supervisor Leticia Gonzalez said in a statement. “He was definitely someone I always wanted on my team. My thoughts and prayers to Martha, his children and grandchildren. His passing leaves a profound loss that will be deeply felt by all those who knew and loved him.”
