Two Bay Area college students died after being swept into the ocean by large waves and rising tides while resting on a beach near Santa Cruz, The New York Times reported.
Authorities said Harshita Nair, 21, and Mahial Sran, 20, both of Fremont, were at Panther and Yellow Bank beaches on June 10 when powerful waves and fast-rising tides pulled them into the water.
Rescue crews recovered both students, but they later died at local hospitals.
Officials said the area is known for dangerous conditions during high tide and warned beachgoers to remain alert as large waves, rip currents and sneaker waves continue to threaten California’s coastline.
