Fall semester is kicking off at Fresno State, but the fun keeps rolling year-round at nearby The Broken Controller. Tucked into Campus Pointe, the entertainment hub offers more than just a quick study break; it’s a destination for gamers and thrill-seekers alike.
Alongside virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), motion racing simulators, and classic arcade games, The Broken Controller is debuting a mobile VR arena for off-site events.
“We have something for everybody,” said co-owner Allison Grays.
Their VR games transport players to another world.
“You’re actually stepping into the game and interacting with it with your full body,” Grays said. “For instance, we have our zombie game where you’re picking up different guns and shooting at the zombies that are getting right in your face. So, it’s a little more intense than just a regular video game.”
In contrast, their AR games blend digital elements with the real world. The AR rock wall transforms into a high-tech playground with obstacle courses and interactive games projected in real time.
“It is the video coming into the real world instead of you going into the video game,” Grays said.
Puzzle lovers can dive into immersive escape rooms that inspire creativity and teamwork, combining VR with storytelling to transcend the ordinary.
“Our newest one is an alien-themed one where you get abducted and you have to find your way back to Earth,” Grays said. “We can do a lot more than a classic escape room that’s physical brick-and-mortar because we can actually put you underwater, and you have to fight off sharks while you’re trying to do puzzles.”
Traditional arcade enthusiasts will find plenty to enjoy too. Two multicades feature classics including Pac-Man, Galaga, Street Fighter, and Mortal Kombat.
Groups can book private rentals for unlimited gameplay, perfect for celebrations or team gatherings. For off-site action, the new mobile VR arena brings gameplay to birthdays, school celebrations, and company parties.
“You’ll still be able to have full motion. You’re not stuck in one place,” Grays said. “We’re offering most of the same games we have in store.”
From casual fun to full-throttle adventures, The Broken Controller delivers something for everyone.
