Jim Costa joined leaders from Reedley College, along with students and community partners, on Thursday to celebrate $2 million in new federal funding aimed at supporting the construction of the AgTEC Innovation Center, a project designed to expand agricultural technology training and workforce development opportunities across the Central Valley.
The funding, secured through the Fiscal Year 2026 Transportation, Housing, and Urban Development (THUD) appropriations legislation, represents a significant federal investment in the region’s evolving agricultural economy. Of the more than $11.2 million Costa helped obtain through the broader legislation, $2 million has been designated specifically for the Reedley-based project as a Community Project Funding request.
Speaking at the event, Costa emphasized the importance of continued investment in workforce development tied to one of the Valley’s most vital industries.
“The Central Valley is the breadbasket of our nation, and we must continue investing in the next generation of agricultural leaders,” Costa said in a press release. “This $2 million federal investment will strengthen hands-on workforce training, expand access to industry-recognized certifications, and prepare students for high-demand careers that keep our agricultural economy strong and resilient.”
Once completed, the AgTEC Innovation Center is expected to serve as a regional hub for agricultural innovation by providing dedicated space for ag-tech startups and expanding access to technical training programs for students and farmworkers.
Reedley College President Dr. Jerry Buckley said the center will play a key role in connecting students with real-world experience while supporting the college’s participation in national agricultural research initiatives through the Community College Alliance for Agriculture Advancement.
“The Reedley College AgTEC Innovation Center will house agriculture technology startups, providing students throughout the region with critical hands-on work experience through internships, job-shadows, and part-time employment,” Buckley said. “We are extremely grateful to Congressman Costa for his efforts in securing these funds for this facility and his constant support of our entire campus.”
In addition to supporting startup growth, the center will offer industry-recognized certifications designed to prepare students and current agricultural workers for careers in both traditional farming and emerging ag-tech fields. Project leaders say the investment will help position the Central Valley at the forefront of agricultural innovation while supporting efforts to build a more sustainable and technologically advanced food production system.
By strengthening workforce pipelines and accelerating the adoption of new technologies, the AgTEC Innovation Center is expected to create expanded economic opportunities across the region while reinforcing the Valley’s longstanding role as a global leader in food production.
